by: Michael A. Cavagnaro Never let it be said that I can’t enjoy the occasional alternative radio-rock record. Which is exactly what this EP from The Evoka Project is - not that there’s anything wrong with that. Moody guitars, soaring vocals, nice harmonies, quiet breaks in the midst of the rocking out, it’s all there. Out of six songs, I would say at least five wouldn’t make me hit the scan button on my radio, and that’s saying something. Track two especially tickled my ears, as it contains a great guitar melody - and are those some xylophones being played in the background? The Evoka Project are at their best when they stick to the more thoughtful, atmospheric songs found in the first third of the album. On the strength of the first two tracks, which I would imagine were put at the beginning for a reason, I would say that this is a worthwhile EP to check out. [ back to press ] |
